H.R. 1349 – A Bill To Let Bikes Back Into Wilderness

HR 1349

Official Title as Introduced to the House of Representatives-  To amend the Wilderness Act to ensure that the use of bicycles, wheelchairs, strollers, and game carts is not prohibited in Wilderness Areas, and for other purposes.

Quick facts:

  • Under current law it is illegal to ride your bicycle in any area deemed as “wilderness”
  • There are miles upon miles of trails once maintained and used by mountain bikers that are now off limits to cyclists because that area was labeled as wilderness.
  • Most mountain bikers do not want access to all wilderness areas.  We want reasonable access, much of that includes lands lost to the misinterpretation of the Wilderness Act.

JIM HASENAUER: WHY IMBA SHOULD SUPPORT REASONABLE BIKE ACCESS TO WILDERNESS AREAS

“The Wilderness Act of 1964 was a beautiful thing. It protected our most precious lands and celebrated the recreational opportunities they would provide for generations to come. The Act made it clear that things with engines were bad, and living power sources like humans and horses were good. The Act didn’t ban bikes; that happened twenty years later.” (http://www.sustainabletrailscoalition.org/#home)
